WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) turned to his most trusted foreign policy adviser, Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), to lead U.S. diplomacy during his second term, replacing Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites), who often was out of step with more hawkish members of the administration's national security team.

I recently posted it would be a good sign if Rumsfeld resigned and was replaced by Powell, indicating lessons had been re-learned. Oh well...

I don't think they will seriously consider her as either candidate in '08. They will TALK about her being a contender, to show how they are all PC and stuff, but the actual nomination won't happen.

Word from inside the Beltway is that many good solid Republicans believe that Condie has risen ABOVE her level of competence. She's a bright person, no doubt, but not as bright as she should be to hold that position. Yes, jumper, it seems apparent from looking at her academic and think-tank record that "diversity" was factored in to her qualifications for the current and (god help us all) future position.

If a person has the necessary skill set for whatever job, he/she should be hired. Hiring or appointing a person because he/she is (fill in the blank here) is just plain stupid.
